Jaipur Travel, Rajasthan
Jaipur, known as `Pink City', was founded by Maharaja Jai Singh
II (1693-1743). It is the capital of the state of Rajasthan.
It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in India. The city has
the grandeur of palaces and old monuments. It is a city of contrasts where
camels and elephants wait at the traffic lights along with
modern day automobiles. There are jewellery showrooms where
artisans engage in gem cutting, polishing and jewellery
manufacturing.
The old city is a great place to wander around. The whole city was painted
pink by Maharaja Man Singh II when Prince of Wales, later Edward
VII, visited Jaipur in 1876. Today, every home within the city is obliged
by law to maintain this facade. The city is laid out in a grid pattern
-- seven blocks of buildings divided by wide, tree lined avenues. In the
center lies the palace, covering the space of another two blocks. The
old city is surrounded by a crenellated wall with seven gates.
In the month of September, temperatures in Jaipur range between 23 and 33 degrees
Celsius. Average rainfall for the month of September is 90 mm.
